MUTTON DAYS
I grew up on a farm
had an idyllic type of life
in many ways
but there is something
that sticks in
my gullet still.
The 70's were drought years
and farming families
lived off the land.
We had sheep
and so it went without
saying
that lamb and
the older mutton
were a big part
of our diet.
I still can remember quite
clearly
the slaughter days
and the horrible smell
that emanated from
the sheds.
Dad bringing over the
sheep carcasses
in bloodied bags
ready for mum
to package up.
Mum had a mincer
which she would use
to grind mutton
for all kinds of
varied uses.
Saturday night was
often Roast Night
I don't have
many memories
of this.
But my horror
was Sunday lunch -
the whole drive
home from
Sunday school
would fill me with
dread.
I knew what was
coming--------
it seemed to be always the same
Horrid grey fat lined
cold mutton!!!
I have set myself the challenge of writing a weekly anectdote, a little memory of a time in my life, joining in with Squiggly Sundays.

If You Met Me
If you met me
what would you say
me so anxious
wanting to please
this surface
unruffled
to the untrained eye
yet as duck to water
madly paddling
just to keep
it together
this perfectness
of which I dream
and hopelessly
yearn to attain
yet it is in the
falling short
my best lessons
are learnt
if you met me
what would you say
Can we be friends?

In connecting up with the amazing Emily this week and her take on sad stories, it made me ponder our own sad story. It's too painful to delve into just now but this piece was redemptive in the making.
MOTHER WISH
I am so
sorry
yet it wasn't me
who shattered
your thoughts
death-knelled your
dreams
If you
would but
care to
think back
take heart
begin all over
again
redeem what is
important
learn a lesson
salvage
broken promises
restore what was
good
true treasure
would be yours
happiness
would unfold
and the little angels
will thank you
one day

This Week At My Place
Our house is rather quiet this week
lots of coughs, lots of sniffles
lots of aches, lots of pains
The men in my life are taking it easy
life is slow and cumbersome
not much is being achieved
but I know we will get through this soon!

I hope you are fairing better at your place.

Grateful Thoughts
This weekend I am grateful for my reserve across the road. I live in the city but this is my touch of country...it goes on for miles and miles and is lovely at any time of the year.
I am grateful for some quiet me time that allowed me to sit and watch "Cairo Time". Have you seen this movie? If not, then do...it only goes 1 1/2 hours and is poignant and beautiful....a lovely interlude on a Saturday afternoon.
I am also grateful for my M's moments of artistic prowess. Isn't it just the best when your children make you something. I am so lucky to have this grimly and this sheep made for me...don't you think?
As always visit here for other reasons to be grateful...

Meadow Flowers - Imperfect Prose on Thursdays
I picked some flowers
for you today
a meadow full of flowers
wild, messy, straggly and torn
but flowers just the same
you looked at me
and asked with your eyes
the why,
but don't you get it
it is because, just because
this wild, mess of life
once knit so close
now lays bare
open bereft
straggled and torn
hearts once strong
beating lifes' path together
shaken and rent
sharp broken specks
of colour
I picked some flowers
for you today
a meadow full of flowers
wild, messy, straggly and torn
but loved all the same.

Again I find inspiration via another blog and have joined in with Emily's Imperfect Prose...although this is actually a poem. The begininnings of this piece floated in my head after seeing Cathie's lovely photo here.
