Learning to Fly

After reading an excerpt from the book 'Chrysalis' by Emma Kate Codrington, I have come up with my piece for my writing group this week. She suffered anorexia nervosa in her teenage years & now looks to raise awareness & funds for a respite centre here in Adelaide. Our subject matter is "sticks & stones" & this took me down a completely different path to what I was expecting, or had initially thought....

This is the piece from Emma's book:

I WISH

i wasn't so fragile
and breakable
like a faerie
i could run wild, barefoot
and free
i trusted myself
someone adored me
i felt beautiful
i could cry & release the gunk
i could fly

Emma Kate Codrington

this is my piece:

LEARNING TO FLY

Macy wants to fly
fly away
from this world
from her current frame
she is going to
emancipate
her body
her image onto
another screen

…...set off and be free

As I look on
with horror
at the sticks now forming
inside her fragile shell
I only see
Macy emaciated
beyond recognition
of her former self

Macy I want you to be
truly free
free from your
broken view
your disjointed
parody of life
only then
will you run
faerie like and free
only then will
you be beautiful
and fly...

  1. Both poems are beautiful! and an interesting spelling of "faerie" in both. Your poem will definitely fit the subject matter of "sticks & stones" and I'm wondering how others in your writing group defined the subject.

  2. Good work here Tiff!
Yes Puddinglane, I'm keen to see what others come up with too. I wrote something last night on the notebook on my phone while I was out at a Maths Quiz with my son. I haven't looked at it again yet. Hmm I hope it's OK!
